PROJECT:
Custom-made Articulated Concrete Block Reef Mats were specifically designed to attract marine life and support habitat restoration. These innovative Concrete Reef Mats are being deployed in Apollo Marine Park as part of a groundbreaking marine conservation initiative. Cultivated sponges are attached to the mats, which are then carefully lowered to the seabed. Used in conjunction with limestone rubble and recycled shells, the mats provide vital structure and support for offshore habitat restoration, helping to regenerate sponge communities and revitalise underwater ecosystems.
This project represents the first large-scale experiment aimed at establishing nature-based solutions to assist in the recovery of degraded sponge habitats located below 60 metres. By integrating natural elements into engineered seabed structures—such as pipelines, wellheads, and wind turbines—it marks a significant step towards blending infrastructure with ecological function in deep marine environments.
