Quick Unroll Erosion Control for Macadamia Orchards

A practical way to stop erosion in it’s tracks once-and-for-all!

Australian Concrete Mats (ACM) are an Australian company who make flexible and permeable concrete mats. Their mats are an effective, efficient and safe way to solve erosion and stabilisation issues in orchards and agricultural scenarios.

Macadamia trees, typically grown in rich volcanic soils in high rainfall areas, these conditions contribute to slippery soils and boggy patches in orchards, especially between the rows and orchard tracks and drains.

Concrete Mats offer permanent hard armour protection to prevent orchard degradation, soil loss and erosion from wind, rain and water.

BEFORE: Pictured is the Macadamia Orchard before concrete erosion mats installed. The photo shows soil erosion and orchard degradation from machinery tracks and ruts formed on ground without grass growing between trees.

The concrete mat unrolls into position, it is supplied with biodegradable nutrition mat that will help to encourage growth of grasses underneath and through the mat.

3 months after installation the vegetation has grown through the mat. In time this will help to anchor the mat and also assist to capture and filter valuable sediment and topsoils from washing away in heavy rain.

SAFE AND STABLE PROTECTION

Machinery used for orchard maintenance and harvesting can form tracks and ruts on the soft soils between the rows of trees.

The mats provide a hard, stable surface for farm vehicles and harvesting machinery, wildlife, and human traffic areas. Safe for roads, tracks and low creek crossings.

The mats are engineered to slow and filter the sediment and water helping to protect and stabilise slopes and drainage channels.

Being permeable, concrete mats are also good on dams, ponds and catchment areas.
Preventing scouring on drains, spillways and overflow channels.

The space between the mats enables grass to grow through the mat. Vegetation growth will anchor the mat as well as slow, filter and capture the runoff. It protects the soils from washing away and prevents deep rills and gullies advancing into the orchards.

Concrete Mats can reduce costs and expenses often lost during production and harvesting in unsafe and wet conditions. Stabilising the ground during orchard maintenance, whilst mowing, spraying and cleaning up to keep out vermin.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR THE RIGHT APPLICATION

Australian Concrete Mats take pride in their performance and specifying the right product for the right application. They manufacture two types of concrete erosion mats:

FLEXIBLE CONCRETE MATS

ARTICULATED CONCRETE CABLE BLOCK MATS

Articulated Concrete Blocks for Scour Protection

COST SAVINGS WITH QUICK RESULTS

The mats prevent and minimise these issues on the farm;

  • Tracks becoming slippery and boggy around and between trees
  • Farm gravel roads being washing out at overflows and spillways
  • Orchard drains being filled and blocked with excess debris
  • Machinery getting bogged during harvesting, spraying or maintenance works
  • Unsafe access to soft edges of dams and drains, preventing regular mowing and clearing
  • Drains not able to be mowed without getting bogged or cut deeper trenches into the drains
  • Drains rendered ineffective due to lack of clearing and maintenance
  • Dam spillways and overflows
  • Nuts being unable to be collected in drains due to excess debris
  • Valuable topsoils and nuts washing away
  • Tree roots exposed leaving them vulnerable to disease and damage

A SIMPLE IDEA THAT’S EASY TO USE

The mats are made with concrete and high strength geogrid. Textured concrete shapes create a hard armoured protective surface for the soil, the space between the concrete shapes makes the mats flexible and permeable.

Installation is easy and quick. It could also be installed using machinery already in the shed. Once the eroded orchard drain is prepared. Scraped and reshaped and seeded. The rolls are placed alongside the drains and simply unrolled into position. Each side is anchored using steel Ubars Anchors. The mats are immediately able to be driven over and begin working right away!

PRACTICAL AND EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

As a long-term and cost-effective investment to protect orchards and farms from soil erosion and sediment control, Australian Concrete Mats are a proven solution that delivers low maintenance and peace of mind.

What sort of underlay do you mats need? Underlay is at no extra cost.

ARTICULATED CONCRETE CABLE BLOCK MATS

An Interconnected Permeable Hard Armour Protection System for Erosion Protection and Stabilisation. The concrete cable block mat system is interconnected by polypropylene rope or stainless steel cables, allowing each individual block to be flexible and form to the terrain of the ground. This interconnected block system is available in an easy manageable 2.4x1.2m size that can be joined to cover a large area.
