Geotextiles for Concrete Mats

Home 9 Geogrid and Underlay

Australian Concrete Mats are manufactured and supplied with various geotextile materials. Learn more about the various geotextiles used in our mats below.

INTERCONNECTING GEOGRID

The individual concrete shapes are interconnected into a high strength geogrid - like engineered rocks tied together!

High Strength and Flexible Geogrid

Flexible Concrete Erosion Mats made by Australian Concrete Mats are essentially concrete shapes embedded into a high strength polyester woven geogrid with geotextile underlay.

The mat is flexible because of geogrid and the shape of the concrete and spacings between them

“Geogrids are geosynthetic materials that have an open geogrid appearance.”

IGS International Geosynthetics Society

What is Geogrid?

Geogrids are geosynthetics with an open geogrid appearance. Woven geogrids are preferred for a range of soil reinforcement applications, including slopes, retaining walls and reinforcement of soils

Physical Properties of Geogrid

  • 40/40 aperture
  • 80KN/m – high longitudinal and transverse strength
  • PVC coated
  • UV treated

Features of Polyester Woven Geogrid

  • Manufactured from high-modulus, high strength and long polyester fibres
  • Fibres are warp-knitted, bundled together and coated with PVC
  • There is also a High junction node strength
  • Geogrids offer extremely high tensile strength with low elongation if required
  • Open aperture confines soils or gravel which increases the shear strength of the material
  • Corrosion resistant, chemically and biologically inert
  • Excellent creep resistance
  • UV resistant
  • Flexible and durable
  • Safe and easy to install
  • Cost effective
  • Unlike steel mesh, polymer geogrids do not damage rock crushers and are significantly cheaper and safer
  • Used for soft and hard rock mining, environmental engineering, roads and pavements, earthworks and foundations

Polyester Geogrid Test Results

  • Independently tested
  • UV Stabilisation
  • High tensile strength and low elongation

Concrete Mat Test Results

  • Flow velocity tested

Every roll comes with geotextile underlay pre-rolled ready to unroll onsite. Choose which underlay is most suitable for your site conditions.

OPTION A:

BIODEGRADABLE NUTRITION GEOTEXTILE

Biodegradable Nutrition mat will promote and support vegetation growth under the concrete ma, however it will biodegrade over time.

OPTION B:

NON WOVEN GEOTEXTILE

Non Woven Geotextile underlay helps prevent scouring under the concrete mats. Available in 200 or 400 gsm

BIODEGRADABLE NUTRITION UNDERLAY

Biodegradable Nutrition Geomat underlay will promote and support vegetation growth under the concrete mat.

Biodegradable Nutrition Geomat Underlay Properties

  • Nutrition geomat has been recently developed by Geosynthetics Australia
  • Biodegradable – breaks down into soil offering up to 6 months of nutrition and fertilisation to the soil
  • Made from high strength polypropylene fibres
  • Soft needle punched with wool and plant fibres
  • Has high tear resistance
  • Features excellent drainage
  • Provides ideal media for seed germination
  • Protects the soil while encouraging strong and healthy vegetation
  • When laid over prepared soils and secured under the concrete mat the geotextile binds with the soil to prevent erosion
  • The Concrete Shapes also helps maintain moisture in soils
  • Small openings promote seed germination while the wool and plant fibres reduce moisture loss from soil and fertilise growing vegetation
  • Also inhibits weed growth during revegetation
  • Wool helps aerate the substrate and retains water
  • Reduces frequency of watering and optimises root growth
  • As the wool decomposes it slowly releases valuable plant nutrients into the soil –
    • Nitrogen-9%,
    • Phosphorous-1% and
    • Potasium-2% as well as
    • Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Sulphur
  • The result is strong, healthy vegetation without the need for additional fertilisation for up to 6 months

Advantages of Biodegradable Nutrition GeoMat

  • Easy to seed;
  • Less water is required to achieve a high germination percentage and high survival rate;
  • Inhibits weeds during early plant growth;
  • Vegetation is strong and healthy;
  • Max water flow rate is 4m/s. before Australian Concrete Mat is attached above it.

Applications and projects that Nutrition Geomat Underlay are used:

  • Used to protect soils in area exposed to wind or high rainfall
  • Used for stabilisation
  • Embankments and slope protection
  • Mine rehabilitation
  • Tailing ponds
  • Landfills and bunds
  • Anywhere that there is needs to establish vegetation
  • Ideal biodegradable alternative to jute and coir matting

NON WOVEN GEOTEXTILE UNDERLAY

Non Woven assists to prevent scouring

Features of Non Woven Geotextile

Effective and economical solution for;

  • FILTRATION
    • Continuous filament structure permits water to pass through while preventing soil migration
  • SEPERATION
    • Suitable for separating 2 layers of soil with different physical properties reduces the amount of fill required and increase lifespan of structures
  • DRAINAGE
    • Improve drainage ideal for draining or venting soils
  • LINER PROTECTION
    • Needle free are ideal for protecting liners from punctures and excessive deformation cushioning relieves stress and minimises chance of contained harmful liquids leaking
  • REINFORCEMENT APPLICATIONS
    • Strength of nonwoven continuous fibre geotextiles can improve the load bearing capacity of a soil’s structure, such as the reinforcement of a retaining wall

Nonwoven GeoTextile Underlay Properties

  • Nonwoven continuous filament geotextile
  • 100% polyester fibres
  • Mechanically bonded by needle punching
  • Strong resistance to acid environments (pH<3.5)
  • Deliver high flow through rates and excellent drainage performance
  • Accommodates soil irregularities
  • More resistant to puncture damage from stones embedded in ground
  • Often used to cushion geomembranes
  • Abrasion resistance especially ideal under concrete erosion mats
  • Continuous filament structure permits water to pass through while preventing soil migration
  • Feature high UV resistance

Non Woven Geotextile features

Nonwoven staple fibre geotextiles can withstand harsh installation conditions and high construction loads. Needle punched nonwovens combine flexibility and high elongation with high puncture resistance. They offer superior filtration (AOS<0.075mm) and prevent the ingress of fines into drainage media. Because staple fibre geotextiles achieve higher interface friction angles than similar weight nonwovens manufactured using other processes, they are beneficial for constructing a stable layer over soft foundation soils.

Staple Fibre Applications

  • Separation
  • Drainage
  • Filtration
  • Geomembrane Protection
  • Environmental Protection
  • Reinforcement

Nonwoven staple fibre needle punched geotextiles offer a cost effective alternative for separation, filtration and protection applications.

They are also chemically resistant to naturally occurring soil environments and polypropylene nonwoven geotextiles have a strong resistance to acid environments (pH<3.5). Nonwoven geotextiles deliver high flow-through rates and excellent drainage performance. They accommodate soil irregularities, are more resistant to puncture damage from stones or other objects embedded in the ground and often used to cushion geomembranes. The abrasion resistance of staple fibre geotextiles is particularly beneficial when only gravel fills are available and under the concrete erosion mat.
