Innovative Concrete Mats Safeguard Dam Infrastructure: A SEQ Success Story
In the picturesque region of South East Queensland (SEQ), dam overflow has long posed risks due to historically poor spillway designs. Such designs allow water to rush too quickly, eroding spillways and potentially leading to catastrophic dam failures by cutting through the dam walls. At one site, a mere 30-cm dam wall remained, threatening the stability of the entire structure. In response, Healthy Land & Water, in collaboration with AirBorn Insight and a dedicated landholder, implemented an innovative solution. By reshaping the spillway and installing flexible concrete mats, they successfully redirected water flow in a controlled manner, significantly reducing the risk of erosion and failure.
The newly completed project was unveiled at an informative field day at Rosevale, hosted by Healthy Land & Water. The event drew a large group of interested landholders eager to learn about effective erosion and pasture management. The field day featured practical demonstrations on riparian weed control and sustainable pasture management, highlighting best practices for managing erosion. Despite being newly established, the concrete mat structure has already proven its resilience during the severe May rainfall events, confirming its effectiveness. This project was made possible through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, in partnership with Queensland’s Healthy Catchments Program and the Scenic Rim Regional Council through the Resilient Rivers partnership. These successes underline the critical role of innovative solutions in preserving our vital water infrastructures and the environment.
